The Biden administration’s top defense officials reportedly attempted to “conceal” a recent incident involving a Chinese surveillance balloon found floating above a US military base in the Pacific Ocean.
According to a Politico report on Monday, the incident occurred in April when the US Navy spotted the balloon hovering close to a vessel of another military service at a location close to the US military’s Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Hawaii.
Following the balloon’s detection, Pentagon officials, including Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and Secretary of the Navy Kenneth Braithwaite, made attempts to “conceal” the incident from the public and Congress.
The Pentagon has downplayed the significance of the incident, stating that such balloons are not “new” and are commonly deployed for intelligence gathering operations by various nations. However, the department is said to be investigating the incident to assess its implications for US security.
The report comes as the US continues to face growing concerns among policymakers and military leaders over aggressive behavior and perceived military posturing by the Chinese military.
