Peacock, NBCUniversal’s streaming platform, is raising its prices by $2 ahead of the 2021 Summer Olympics. This move comes amidst the growing competition in the streaming market, with companies like Netflix, Disney+, and HBO Max vying for subscriber attention and dollars.
The price hike affects both versions of Peacock’s premium tier: the ad-supported Premium plan, which originally costs $4.99, will now be $6.99 per month, and the ad-free Premium Plus plan, previously priced at $9.99, will increase to $11.99 per month. This change is expected to commence from July 2021, just in time for the Summer Olympics.
Peacock justifies this increase by pointing to their extensive library of content that includes movies, TV series, and popular live sports events like the Olympics. It will also be the exclusive home to WWE Network and Premier League soccer matches. Despite the increase in price, the service will still offer a free tier with limited programming.
