Spirit AeroSystems, a major supplier of commercial airplane assemblies and components, has announced it will furlough approximately 700 employees amidst a continuing strike by Boeing machinists. The strike, which began weeks ago, has dramatically affected Boeing’s production line, therefore impacting Spirit’s workload.
Production delays caused by the strike have led Spirit AeroSystems to reduce its own workforce temporarily in order to maintain economic stability. The company’s furloughed employees, who mainly work on Boeing projects, will be reintegrated once Boeing’s manufacturing resumes its normal pace.
Spirit AeroSystems is one of the world’s largest non-OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) producers of large aerostructures, including fuselages, pylons, nacelles and wing components. It should be noted, however that while they do work with other major commercial companies like Airbus, their production is largely tied to Boeing.
The downturn reflects the interconnectedness of the aerospace industry, where delays or disruptions at one company can send ripples through its supply chain. It also highlights the potential long-term financial impact if the Boeing strike continues to drag on.
