The court has rejected a plea agreement proposed by Boeing in relation to the 737 Max crashes that occurred in 2018 and 2019. The deal would’ve resolved a criminal charge against the company for allegedly conspiring to defraud the Federal Aviation Administration’s Aircraft Evaluation Group.
The plea deal was reportedly rejected due to the court’s concerns that it was not in the interest of justice. This decision could potentially trigger a trial or the negotiation of a different plea agreement.
However, specifics as to why the agreement was not acceptable were not provided. Boeing has been facing the fallout from the two deadly crashes that involved their 737 Max planes in Indonesia and Ethiopia, which killed a total of 346 people. Investigations have suggested that a new flight control system could be partly to blame, which Boeing reportedly failed to fully disclose to pilots.
