Cryptocurrency company Tether has recently frozen $5.2 million worth of its stablecoin, USDT, due to phishing links. This action was taken as a security measure, to protect end-users and the integrity of the Tether network.
Phishing is a cybercrime where individuals are contacted by email, telephone or text message by someone pretending to be a legitimate institution. The individual is then tricked into providing sensitive data such as personally identifiable information, bombing details, and passwords. In this situation, those phishing links were probably used to trick individuals into sending their USDT to the perpetrator’s address.
Monitoring and anti-fraud teams at Tether detected and responded to the threat promptly, thereby minimizing the potential damage.
Remember, it is always important to verify the source of a link before clicking on it or providing any personal information. Furthermore, use multifactor authentication methods whenever possible to increase your account’s security. If you suspect any suspicious activity related to your Tether holdings, it is recommended to report it immediately to the relevant teams.
